The Myth & The Majesty

Quick rant: my process control class is driving me batty. It's really just differential equations all over again. Not DifEQ 2, mind you. Just a repeat. I'd much rather be learning something new. At the very least, it wouldn't feel like such a waste. Argh. At least I'm not alone in that feeling. Sir Calvert seems to feel the same way ("seems" is being too general ... he rants loudly about his disdain for the class), and all of us chem-es just giggle when S.A. mentions MathCAD. (Tee hee!) I shouldn't complain too loudly. This is, after all, the Internet, and besides, it could be much worse. For instance, there is at least one professor that I'm tremendously relieved isn't teaching the class. I'll take S.A. any day over the other dude. There seem to be lapses in my posts these days. I’m not sure I have a good excuse; I spend a lot of time doing homework, and when I’m not, I don’t usually want to be on a computer. Unless the right people are on MSN, of course. Anyway, not a whole lot of excitement, but I realized I haven’t given any reviews on the movies I’ve been to lately, so here goes: "Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." This movie actually caught me off guard -- it was pretty true to the book (left out some key parts, as movies often do), but more specifically, it was almost exactly as I pictured. When Lucy stepped into Narnia for the first time -- wow. You could have been in my head while I was reading the book. In addition, Tilda Swinton made the perfectly creepy White Witch. (If she looked familiar, it might be because she was the equally creepy Gabriel in "Constantine.") Recommended. In general. “Brokeback Mountain.” Oscar-runner for a reason. I loved this movie; ...

Classes have officially started; I have my biochemical engineering lab in an hour. Sounds scary, doesn't it? Perhaps more so for those who don't know what we're doing, so allow me to put your minds at ease -- our focus is mainly on fermentation. Namely, we brew beer. No joke. I get to meet with the academic enrollment lady today to iron out my last semester here. To all aspiring Techies -- DON'T PROCRASTINATE ON YOUR GENERALS!! If you do that, they suddenly yank away your ability to register all by yourself. On top of that, you get to take classes with kids you would have babysat for eight or so years ago. It's a little bit freaky. In any case, this semester looks ... interesting. Everybody's back in town, my classes are so-so (four in a row, 9-1 MWF, and a couple random labs on Tuesday and Thursday), and I already have homework. I can't decide if it will be a good interesting or a bad interesting, but I suspect quite strongly that it won't be ...

Wow, I -- er, I mean ... It's been ... um ... *Ahem* Happy New Year! There we go. It's been awhile. I'm out of blogging practice. I sat down to type and my fingers got confused. It's still break, and I'm still calling SuFu home base. Only for a few more days -- come Saturday, it's back to normal-ish. Break's been nice. I got home, then went to Minneapolis for a couple of days, then I got back home and went to Huron for a couple of days, then I got home for Christmas Day, and disappeared to Storm for a few days. Finally, I got home -- and went to Waseca for a couple days. I don't sit still very well. Now I'm home with all intentions of staying put, at least for the next three days. After that, it's back to school and spring semester. My last spring semester. Weird. Darren and Andy will both be back in RC, too. Good stuff. It’s Christmas. Okay, you knew I couldn’t resist. You knew there was no way I could let a big holiday go by without saying something more than “Yay!” Deal with it. It’s Christmas, almost. All the telltale signs are there, from the Salvation Army Santas to the shopping day countdowns. (I would say store décor, but I don’t consider Halloween to be Christmas season.) Heck, there’s even snow on the ground ... or there was, until yesterday. A bunch of our neighbors have their lights up now … We’re starting to look like the neighborhood Scrooges. I will no longer judge those houses that aren’t decorated – they might be poor college students. I enjoy the season. I’ve said this before, and it’s worth restating. Despite the knowledge that it’s a temporary thing, that in a month it will all be forgotten, that there are so many people just “faking it” for a while … despite the knowledge that I live in a land where a holy holiday can become a marketing bonanza … I choose to enjoy it. 'Tis the season for final exams, freakishly cold weather, and supersaturated department stores. Unfortunately, all I've been able to talk about lately is my hideously boring but stressful schedule. For that, I apologize. Now, if only I could come up with a worthwhile topic ... In only six days, I will be done. Then it's home for the holidays--kind of. Technically speaking, I will be home for Christmas. Much travel planned. A trip back out here to go skiing (or watch people ski, whatever), hopefully two trips to Minneapolis, at least one trek to Huron ... Good stuff. There's really not a whole lot to say. Most of the comments I could make on my present life would somehow get me in trouble with someone who would stumble on this thing (*cough*) by some accident of nature, and I just don't want to deal with that.
