The Doldrums

"These are the things that happen when you lose your mind a little..." I have been uncharacteristically silent this month. You're welcome. You see, aside from some weekend antics (including time with Andyman and Mrs. Andyman, introduction to someone who will forever be known in my head as Awkward Tom, a lot of work at home including painting a room a shade of beige called "Kitten Fluff," and starting my prep for the biology GRE subject test), I have very little going on. I managed to file my taxes and I'm getting a return that will allow me to stay afloat for another couple of months. I've cooked a lot. Oh, and I made a cake that was damn near perfect. (Twice. Which probably means something catastrophic will happen the third time.) That taxes thing has me excited. Among other things, it means I can get a job because I want one (which I do, thanks to cabin fever), not because I'm fearing poverty. Let's face it -- that's a good feeli

I Didn't Forget.

I almost did, but not quite. I'm aware that it's Valentine's Day. Although I nearly made the mistake of wearing my favorite red shirt today and then found myself thankful that I haven't yet done laundry. I just didn't want to be accidentally cheesy. Like last year, I really don't have much to add. I linked to a bunch of old posts -- and today I'm going to cheat like I've never cheated before and simply link to last year's post.  Yep. What are my plans? Well, I'm going to go check out the Verizon store shortly, and then I've got my first tutoring session with a girl struggling with geometry. I have no further plans (not even my usual V-Day me-date) because I have no income. It's a limiter. So I'll sign off with my Facebook status update for today: To my married/engaged/etc. friends: I'm happy you have someone to celebrate V-Day with. Enjoy! To my single friends: I'm happy you don't have to deal with finding gifts,

A Cellular Discussion

Note: This isn't terribly interesting, although it gives a little insight into my issues with technology. Sort of. If you're not interested, skip to the end and help me out by leaving some phone advice. I am not easy on electronics. In my history -- namely the last decade -- I have a dead laptop (I now refer to it as my doorstop), a dead desktop (went out in spectacular fashion, refusing to even boot by the end), and  two now-defunct mp3 players. Admittedly not so bad. Unfortunately, it takes a turn when it comes to cell phones. In the last nine years, I've had five phones. The first lasted about 3.5 years. The most recent is at just over 2.5 years. As you'll notice, that leaves a total of 3 years (a little less, actually) for the three in between. My first phone was a Kyocera, one of the first brick phones with graphics and games. It wasn't in color ... but then again, it was 2001. This was before the Razr, before most flip phones, before there were option

Observations On A Quiet Week

February has been several things. It has been cold. It has been oddly emotional. It has been ... not very interesting. Last weekend I attended the funeral of Jonah, alongside several friends. While it was good to see everybody, the reason ... well, sucked. Talk of an upcoming summer camping trip (or something to that effect) sounds much, much better. (Our other choice is to wait for a wedding and there just aren't many of us left. I'm not the only bad example of that.) And then ... The Packers won the Super Bowl . Massive mood swing. Seriously, that put me in a pretty good mood for the rest of the week. After that, it was a matter of finding things to do around here. I have plenty of projects and an upcoming tutoring gig. I'm not bored. I've resigned myself to a few more weeks of quiet. Heck, I'm even enjoying it. Given that I've been pretty busy since I was, oh, fifteen and could get a job (and more importantly, get myself to and from a job), th

A Bright Side

There are very specific times I'm perfectly okay with being unemployed. The first is every Monday morning when I wake up and don't have to get my butt to work. It's a beautiful thing. The second? Days like today when the actual temperature -- not the windchill -- is below zero and I am in no way required to leave the house. This is getting ridiculous.
