The entirety of my college career, July was the most uncomfortable time to be in Rapid City.

The first two weeks especially ... This was when it would hit 100°, up to 110°, almost without effort. These were the scorching days, the extreme fire danger days, the let's-go-hide-in-a-basement days.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I checked the weather forecast for next week and found ... Seventies. Rain. Chilly nights.

I'm not sure what to do with this. This weekend is expected to be hot and thunder-y, but the week? Not so much.

Don't get me wrong. There's no real downside to the temperature NOT reaching 100° ... Just utter confusion on my part, and, well, I'm used to utter confusion.

Yeah - summer in SD was painful. Even more so considering how cold it gets in the winter. Is there no justice?

Now I realize that the answer is: no. None whatsoever.

I am almost done with my first year in CA (yeah - you know where) and I never knew that there was a place where the weather was so good.

Of course, I'm not a big fan of living here - it's a big cultural shift from the midwest.

I've thought about defecting to costal Portugal. I hear the weather there is just as good, but you don't have to deal with living in CA.

What do you think?

Portugal! Interesting choice. Sounds promising, although there would be an entirely different kind of cultural shift greeting you there. Not sure if that would be an improvement over Cali since I haven't actually been to either place.

Personally, I don't mind Wisconsin -- it's a little more moderate than SD, there's considerably less wind, and I have yet to see a day over 100. That was a welcome shift.

Although I miss terrain. And open space. The trees inspire a little claustrophia at times.

True - more wind in SD and the preponderance of open space is also hard to miss.

Wisconsin's mosquitoes are nastier.

I agree - the summers are nicer and Wisconsin has more lakes. Where I grew up, we had three to choose from with easy biking distance.

The confusion continues. Tuesdays seem to be the days for odd discoveries. Hmmm ... Much stress. Big presentation for work tomorrow. I'm downright scared right now, but that's probably mostly due to the fact that I have NO IDEA what to expect. On the bright side, in 24 hours, it'll all be over. Thank goodness. The Ashley Files: The Gerbil Story

I'm not totally sure what spurred this memory, but this is a story that needs to be told. Over the years, I've had a lot of random jobs. It started when I was young and glued pictures for bridge reports (my family's version of "working with the family business). I had a job at Subway one summer (easily my least-favorite job), was a bridge inspection field technician with the family business, worked in a church camp kitchen, and was a lab assistant. The summer I started this blog, I was working at the school's day care. It was my second summer there. The job was certainly not what I was hoping to do the rest of my life -- but for a nineteen-year-old it was decent money and okay hours. And hey, a couple times a week I got to hang out at the pool and get paid for it. Not a bad gig. 2019 Year In Review

It was awful. Fine. It wasn’t all bad. I have a niece now. My job is pretty awesome. I like my residence fine. I … avoided all parking tickets? But wow, was there a lot of garbage in the meantime. An unexpected funeral for a friend who died decidedly too young. Family members in and out of (and back into) the hospital. And throughout the last third, the specter of cancer hanging over everything. While a part of me keeps saying, “There is no need to dwell on all the crap, Ashley,” the rest of me is almost too exhausted for optimism. 2020 has potential, yes. Buckets of potential. Oodles of it. 2020 is chaotic neutral staring us in the face. Switzerland with anger issues. Taunting us with its possibilities. RIP 2019. 2020... Please don't be a jerk.
