Office, Interrupted

Sometime Monday evening, Murphy grabbed onto this building and just started shaking it like a snow globe.

It started with the phones, which went down during a system backup. All day yesterday, they were silent, which was both kind of soothing and really irritating.

No ringing, no pages, no voicemail. It was all down.

Somewhere in there they decided to test the air system as well thanks to a negative pressure issue in the building. (Yes. This means that this office does, in fact, suck.) Naturally, we're in the middle of a heat wave and yesterday was quite warm and humid. The building took on that wonderful malaria quality that it seems so fond of and the complaining hit a fever pitch.

Today, the phones work but voicemail is still malfunctioning. This means that when people do call, it now rings ... and rings ... and rings ... until the person on the other end realizes that a person can't be summoned back to his desk just because the phone has already rung twenty times.

I miss yesterday's quiet.

Then, for no known reason, there was a power flicker this morning. Just a flicker -- but enough for everything not on battery back-up to shut down and restart, including most of the computers in the building. (Every time that happens I'm exceedingly grateful to have a laptop instead of a desktop.)

Generally a quick recovery, but this time it took out our network for the better part of an hour, which meant there was no email or access to the project drives.

No plumbing issues yet, but it's only Wednesday.

Egads.
