A Decade Later

It was the end of my freshman year of high school. I was 14; my 15th birthday was just a couple weeks away.

The students involved were peers.

The survivors of that day are now contributing members of society, homeowners, parents, advocates. They have, in large part, overcome that day, overpowered it, refused to let it reign.

It is one of the events that has defined the current generation, and it happened in a place just like any other -- where people were prone to scoff, "Nah, that can't happen here."

Have we changed?

I hope so.
